William A. "Sonny" Smith's Obituary
William “Sonny” Smith, 81 of Coulterville went to live with his Heavenly Father on Oct. 3, 2025 at home with his wife at his side.
He was born May 14, 1944 to Edith Smith and Archie Beck in Coulterville, IL. He married Carol Misselhorn of Sparta on July 31, 1965, recently celebrating 60 years of marriage.
He was a proud retired UMWA Coal Miner Local 2161 having worked in underground mining for 36 years retiring in 2004.
Sonny was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Coulterville serving as a trustee and was always eager to help his loving church family. He was a long time member of the Rod and Gun Club in Schuline, IL, serving as Treasurer for many years.
Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with Carol. His greatest joy was his great grandchildren Mylee and Gannon. They traveled with Mylee, watching her play softball for many years. He also enjoyed his garden, looking forward to every spring, planting and waiting for that first tomato, mushroom hunting with special friend Tom Harvey, and helping special friend Jesse with his chickens.
He is survived by his wife Carol of Coulterville, one daughter Lori Rettinger of Collinsville; one granddaughter Ashley Davis & husband Travis of Coulterville; one great granddaughter Mylee Davis and one great grandson Gannon Davis. One sister, Mary Wilson & husband Jim of Sparta; two brothers, Ray McConachie & wife Kathy of Chester, and Dennis Beck and wife Linda of Chester; three brother-in-law’s Jerry Stough of Ellenton, Florida, Bob Misselhorn & wife Martha of Sparta, Dave Misselhorn and wife Sheila of St. Louis, MO; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; special and devoted friends Jesse and Pam Zeppeda, Keith Rettinger and loving friend Nicole, and his awesome loving Pastor Christine Lippert.
Sonny was preceded in death by mother Edith McConachie and step-father Leland McConachie, father-in-law Scotty Misselhorn, mother-in-law Carlene Misselhorn, and
Sister Carolyn Stough of Ellenton, Florida.
His wishes were to be cremated.
A celebration of life will be on Sunday, December 7, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., at United Methodist Church of Coulterville.
