Willa M. "Smitty" Schaeffer's Obituary
Willa M. "Smitty" Schaeffer, age 93, of Coulterville, IL, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 11:52 p.m. in Memorial Hospital of Belleville, Belleville, IL. Smitty was born on November 7, 1916 in Fredonia, KY, a daughter to William P. and Nellie E. (McGough) Smith. She married Clifford Ralph Schaeffer and he preceded her in death on October 12, 1970. She was a member of the Coulterville United Methodist Church, Coulterville, IL, where she was the oldest living member having attended for 80 years. She worked for Pinckneyville Garment Factory and was a member Eastern Star and U.LG.W.A. Smitty enjoyed cooking, had a bigger than life personality and she never met a stranger. What brought her the greatest joy in her life was her family. She was a proud mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Smitty is survived by a son, Charles (Judy) Schaeffer of Marissa, IL; a daughter, Gladys "Peggy" (George) Hass of Fairview Heights, IL; a brother, Gene Smith of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Shorty, Benny, Clayton, and Charles Smith; three sisters, Annis Blank, Eulalia Stehl and Irene Cairns. Funeral services will be held at the Coulterville United Methodist Church, Coulterville, IL on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Doctor Dennis Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in Coulterville City Cemetery, Coulterville, IL. Friends may call at the Coulterville United Methodist Church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to Coulterville United Methodist Church.
