Roger E. Hood's Obituary
Roger E. Hood, age 93, of Coulterville, IL, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 11:52 a.m. in Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, IL. Roger was born on January 18, 1920 in Coulterville, IL, a son to Alexander Robert and Eva (Meader) Hood. On August 18, 1945, he married Helen Sheeler in Vandalia, IL and she survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country during WW II and achieving the rank of Tec5. He received numerous medals including three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, and nine campaign medals; all of which were in the African and European theatre of combat. He made a career in the coal mines working for Zeigler Coal Co. for 36 years until his retirement in 1983. While Roger resided in Coulterville, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Coulterville, IL and was a very active life member of the local VFW Post #6865. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and fishing, hunting and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Helen Hood of Coulterville, IL; one son, Parley (Deborah) Hood of Coulterville, IL; two daughters, Trudy (John) Calvetti of Pinckneyville, IL, and Tonya (David) Thompson of Oakdale, IL; one sister, Zua (Donald) Rehbein of Belleville, IL; eight grandchildren, Aaron (Erin) Hood, Daralynn (Robert) Gross, Jesse (Dawn) Hood, John (Virginia) Calvetti, Jocelyn (Rodney) Cruise, Andrew (Geri) Calvetti, Wesley Thompson and Mitchell Thompson; twelve great-grandchildren, John K. "Tré" and Zacary Calvetti, Jerica, Joseph and Chance Cruise, Giuseppe Calvetti, Sydney and Jenna Hood, Owen and Jacoby Gross, and Lydia and Kiera Hood; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Truman, Harrie and Jesse Hood and three sisters, Myra Clevenger, Elsa Graul and Cleo Hood in infancy. Funeral services will be held at the Coulterville United Methodist Church, Coulterville, IL on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor John Hackman officiating. Interment will be in Coulterville City Cemetery, Coulterville, IL. Military rites will be conducted by Coulterville V.F.W. Post #6865. Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday at the church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Coulterville V.F.W. Post #6865, Children's Tumor Foundation or Ronald McDonald House.
