Robert D. Stewart's Obituary
Robert D. Stewart, age 89, of DuQuoin, IL, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at 6:07 p.m., in DuQuoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, DuQuoin, IL.
Robert was born on May 1, 1933 in Pinckneyville, IL, a son to William F. and Helen (DePriest) Stewart. On September 13, 1958, he married Frances Poiter in Pinckneyville, IL and she preceded him in death on October 13, 2016 after 58 years of marriage. He had worked as a coal miner at Freeman United Coal Company for 25 years. Robert honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, DuQuoin, IL, where he became a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He also attended the Philadelphia Baptist Church, DuQuoin, IL. Robert was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his two daughters, Denise (Jim) Jeffers of Sparta, IL, and Lori Higgerson of DuQuoin, IL; one brother, William M. (Catherine) Stewart of Port Charlotte, FL; four grandchildren, Justin (Alinda) Jeffers of Sparta, IL, Tyler (Kelsey) Jeffers of Colorado Springs, CO, Amanda (Dusty) Jarowski of DuQuoin, IL, and Josh Higgerson (significant other Marii Diaz) of DuQuoin, IL; nine great-grandchildren, Emma Jo Jarowski, Hattie Jean Jarowski, Claire Frances Jarowski, Jack Alan Jeffers, Tyler Ingles, Trenton Ingles, Norah Elise Jeffers, Emersyn Marie Jeffers and Nellie Jane Jeffers; special friend, Ema Jean Poling and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances Stewart; brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Jo Stewart; and a nephew, David Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, DuQuoin, IL on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Carl Schrage officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, DuQuoin, IL. Military rites will be performed by DuQuoin V.F.W. Post #513 and American Legion Post #647.
Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, DuQuoin on Friday, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard service at 1:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Masses or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
