Mildred B. Lanton's Obituary
Mildred B. Lanton, age 85, of Coulterville, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 7:55 p.m. in Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, IL. Mildred was born on January 21, 1924 in DuQuoin, IL, a daughter to Horace W. and Ethel M. (Bigby) Woods. On January 31, 1953, she married Wayman P. Lanton in DuQuoin, IL, they were married for 52 years and he preceded her in death. Mildred was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Sparta, IL for 43 years and was the mother of the church. She was the first black woman to be employed at Spartan Aluminum, Sparta, IL. She was a good Christian woman, who enjoyed cooking, soap operas, basketball, taking trips with the ladies club, gardening and taking care of her family. She is survived by two sons: Phillip W. Lanton of Coulterville, IL and Mickey Lanton of Sparta, IL, seven grandchildren including Justin and Candice Lanton who helped Phillip and Mickey take special care of their grandparents for the past six years, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great- grandchild, three sisters: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kelley of Sparta, IL, Irma Organ of Aurora, IL and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beckley of DuQuoin, IL and many dear relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons: Kenny Owens, Jr. and Rickey Lanton and five brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Sparta, IL on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Crawford Wilson and Reverend Joseph Edmonson officiating. Interment will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, DuQuoin, IL. Friends may call at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Sparta, IL on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Sparta, IL. Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
