Mary Downen's Obituary
Mary Estelle Downen, age 66, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 5:26 p.m. in Pinckneyville Community Hospital Emergency Room, Pinckneyville, IL. Mary was born on February 26, 1950 in DuQuoin, IL, a daughter to Bernard J. and Eunice M. (Stern) Smith. On October 21, 1972, she married Lyle Albert "Al" Downen in St. Ann Catholic Church, Nashville, IL and he survives. Mary was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL. She had worked as a registered nurse and Director of Nurses at Pinckneyville Community Hospital, Pinckneyville, IL for over 25 years. She enjoyed bird watching, especially cardinals, baking and decorating wedding cakes, was totally committed to all things "nursing" and was a people person who always wanted to help others. Mary's greatest joy was being a grandma. Survivors include her husband, Lyle "Al" Downen of Pinckneyville, IL; two sons, Robert Michael (Jennifer) Downen of San Antonio, TX and Todd Alan (Letitia) Downen of Fairview Heights, IL; one daughter, Mary Lynn (David) Carns of Pinckneyville, IL; ten grandchildren, Kaleb Hubler, Allison (Keith) Smith, Tyler Downen, Logan Downen, Tucker Downen, Jennifer Carns, Lindsay Carns, Todd (Cassidy) Carns, Lucy Downen and Kolbi Carns; two great-grandchildren, Alayna and Bryson; one brother, Bernard J. (Carol) Smith of Pinckneyville, IL; three sisters, Brenda Smith of Mt. Prospect, IL, Margaret Maschhoff of Nashville, IL and Janet Smith of Pinckneyville, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Bruno Catholic Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL. The rosary will be recited Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. Friends may call at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Bruno Catholic School. Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
