Mary Deane (Bartle) Johnson's Obituary
In today's world, true connections seem harder to find and friendships seem harder to make. Mary Deane Johnson was a person who made connections gracefully and whose friendships came easily. Mary Deane's playful smile could light up a room, and her quick wit always got a laugh.
A great lover of beauty, art, and fashion, she tried to bring something beautiful into the world everywhere she went. And she went so many places, both as the manager of the Neiman Marcus Travel Service in Atlanta and at the side of her husband, Lehman (Lee) H. Johnson. Mary Deane was born on January 24, 1944, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Dean and Golda Bartle of Pinckneyville, IL, and Pinckneyville always held a special place in her heart. The Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Queen of 1960, Mary Deane was a graduate of Pinckneyville High School and attended Millsaps College in Mississippi. Along with Lee, she lived, and made lasting friendships, in Boston, MA; Portland, OR; Plano, TX; Pasadena, CA; and Hilton Head, SC, but she loved Marietta, GA dearly and she and Lee made their home there in 2005. She lived in Marietta, surrounded by dear friends in the home she loved, until she passed on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at the age of 79.
Mary Deane is survived by her husband of 37 years, Lee; her step-children Michael Johnson (and wife Hannah Poteat) of Oakland, California and Nicole Gustine (and husband Dave Gustine) of Anchorage, Alaska; and grandchildren John and Elizabeth Gustine. She is also survived by friends all over the world, because Mary Deane never left a room without making a friend in it.
