Lawrence "Larry" Thompson's Obituary
Lawrence "Larry" Thompson, age 78, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 2:55 p.m. in Good Samaritan Hospital, Mt. Vernon, IL.
Lawrence was born on October 19, 1939 in Ashley, IL, a son to John W. and Opal (Parker) Thompson. On December 27, 1959, he married Nancy Mae Kretz in DuBois, IL and she survives. He began his career in 1959 as a postal worker in the U.S. postal service until he retired as postmaster in Pinckneyville, IL in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the Optimist Club where he served as Lt. Governor and organized the Easter egg hunt. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, where he served as a deacon and trustee for many years. Lawrence loved gardening, fishing, tole painting, wood working, word search, crossword puzzles, feeding birds and reading his bible daily.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Thompson of Pinckneyville, IL; three children, Shelley (Stephen) Fowler of Ina, IL, Lisa (Larry) Valier of DuQuoin, IL and Mark (Denise) Thompson of Pendleton, IN; one brother, Thomas (Pam) Thompson of Centralia, IL; one sister-in-law, Sara Bauza of Nashville, IL; five grandchildren, Brittany (Brandon) Suhling, Joshua (Bethany) Valier, Jessica (Josh) Hamburger, Jacob Valier (special friend, Kate Toler) and Kaysen Thompson; five great-grandchildren, Breckin Suhling, Jensen Suhling, Liam Valier, Lainey Valier, Carleigh Hamburger, and looking forward to another great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Jay Lowder officiating. Interment will be in Ashley City Cemetery, Ashley, IL.
Friends may call at First Baptist Church on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church.
