Joseph F. Dawson, Sr.'s Obituary
Joseph F. Dawson, Sr., age 87, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 4:45 a.m. in his home. Joseph was born on February 14, 1927 in Columbus, OH, a son to Frederick and Della Mae (Metzger) Dawson. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. He married Loretta McCarthy who preceded him in death. On November 11, 1972, he married Catherine Copeskey in Milwaukee, WI and she survives. He was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL. Joseph graduated from Defiance College, Defiance, OH, earned his master's degree at DePaul University, Chicago, IL and received his superintendent's certificate at the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. He was an avid reader, especially of history. Having played football in college, he loved the sport and often devoted his Saturday to watching college football. He was an avid Ohio State fan. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Catherine Dawson of Pinckneyville, IL; a brother, William (Earlene) Dawson; a sister, Angela May "Nada" Dawson Manuel; a half-brother, Jack Dawson; and a brother-in-law, Andy Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joseph F. Dawson, Jr.; an infant brother, Joseph Dawson; a sister, JoAnn Lewis; and a brother-in-law, Rod Manuel. Funeral mass will be held at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Friday, December 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Augustine Ibezimako officiating. Interment will be in St. Bruno Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL. Military graveside services will be provided by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504, Pinckneyville, IL. Friends may call at St. Bruno Catholic Church on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Bruno School Endowment Fund. Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL is in charge of arrangements.
