Joseph "Big Joe" Martin's Obituary
Joseph "Big Joe" Martin, age 80, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 7:39 a.m. in Pinckneyville Community Hospital, Pinckneyville, IL.
Joe was born on July 2, 1937 in DuQuoin, IL, a son of George F. and Caroline L. "Carrie" (Bruns) Martin. On February 6, 1959, he married Marilyn Heine at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL and she survives. He had farmed all of his life and also worked at Robert VanClostere Construction from 1958-1964, then as a coal miner at Arch until he retired in 1994. After retiring, he worked at Loos Excavating. He was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL and the Knights of Columbus. He was a den leader for Webelos Pack #47 and Boy Scouts of America, enjoyed farming, taking care of his cows and shooting guns. Joe always loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Martin of Pinckneyville, IL; two sons, Robert Martin and Danny (Kim) Martin; two daughters, Susan (Doug) Nehrkorn and Marcia Hill (Jason Craig), all of Pinckneyville, IL; one brother, Bernard (Jane) Martin of Pinckneyville, IL; two sisters, Mary Faulkner of Pinckneyville, IL and Juliann Loos of Belvidere, IL; thirteenĀ grandchildren, Bobby Joe Martin, Josh Martin, Alex Martin, Darrah Craig, Collin Hill, Carley Hill, Sarah (John) Wilson, Carolyn (Gary) Gaudio, Greg Nehrkorn, Danielle (Sam) Barton, Joseph (Ashley) Martin, Justin (Kristen) Martin and Nicole (Eric) Bruno; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank Martin, John Martin and George Martin; and three sisters, Carolyn Martin, Joann Sexton and Cathy Presswood.
Funeral services will be held at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Pinckneyville, IL ?on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Augustine Ibezimako officiating. Interment will be in St. Bruno Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.
Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL ?on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday morning at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association and St. Bruno School.
