John L. Rainey's Obituary
John L. Rainey, age 74, of Coulterville, IL, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 2:32 p.m. in St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond Heights, MO.
John was born on October 12, 1946 at his family home in Coulterville, IL, a son to Lawrence and Blanche (Folden) Rainey, Sr. On September 11, 1971, he married Donna Wilson in Sparta, IL and enjoyed 50 years of marriage together. John worked as a coal miner for over 30 years and was a member of the United Mine Workers Association. He was a member and trustee for the First Baptist Church, Coulterville, IL. He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association. John enjoyed hunting, trapshooting, woodworking, watching the New Orleans Saints, and was a car enthusiast. John was known for his 4th of July firework display. He loved music and dancing, especially 50s and 60s music. John was passionate about his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who particularly cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He supported his community by serving as the VFW Commander for Post # 6865 for nine years, and by being a drill team member for 53 years. He always enjoyed the Tuesday night bingo bunch.
John honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Rainey of Coulterville, IL; one son, Tim McDougal (Meghan Filipsic) of Coulterville, IL; one daughter, Julie (Steve) Hand of Coulterville, IL; three grandchildren, John Tyler Hand, Austin Steven Hand, and Madison McDougal, all of Coulterville, IL; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law. John had a host of friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Lawrence Rainey Jr., William Rainey, and Delmond Rainey.
Funeral services will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Robert Davis officiating. Interment will be in the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery, Swanwick, IL. Military honors will be provided by Coulterville VFW Post # 6865 and the United States Army.
Visitation will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Veterans' Home, Anna, IL.
Covid 19 mandates and restrictions will be adhered to and masks will be required.
