Joan Lee Hurst's Obituary
Joan Lee Hurst, 90, of Coulterville, IL, passed away at 2:08 a.m. at the Coulterville Care Center, Coulterville, IL. Joan was born on June 9, 1934, to the late William Curtis and Margaret (O'Neill) Sheeler in Coulterville, IL. She married William Rex Hurst on March 7, 1954, in Coulterville, IL. Rex preceded her in death on October 2, 2002.
As a teenager, Joan worked as a switchboard operator at the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in St. Louis, MO. Later in life, she worked as a telephone operator in Sparta, IL. Joan was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Coulterville Women's Club, and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coulterville. Joan had a passion for reading and was a member of several book clubs. Her favorite genre was historical nonfiction. She loved gardening and always had a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees in her yard. She possessed a talent for sewing and quilting and made many beautiful, hand sewn quilts for family members. Joan always enjoyed baking and was always looking for a new recipe. At Christmas , she always took a big platter of her homemade cookies to the staff at the bank, post office, and doctor's office in Coulterville. Joan loved her family and friends deeply, and she was always happiest celebrating milestones and life events with her loved ones. She was also always there for them during hard times and in times of need. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her.
Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia "Cyndee" Hurst of Wildwood, MO; a son, William "Jeff" (Brenda) Hurst of Platte City, MO; two grandsons, Devin Hurst (Marcia Recks) of Wildwood, MO, and Jeremy Hurst (Lindsay Kline-Paul) of San Francisco, CA; a granddaughter, Erica Megan Dixon of San Francisco, CA; two great-granddaughters, Paiten Gastreich-Hurst of Wildwood, MO, and Gwendolyn Goglin of San Francisco, CA; one brother, Thomas "Tom" (Betty) Sheeler of Belleville, IL; two sisters-in-law, Leola Sheeler of Sparta, IL, and Anna Marie Sheeler of Coulterville, IL; nine nieces; and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Charles "Bud" Sheeler, and Franklin "Frank" Sheeler; two sisters, Helen Hood, and Marguerite "Marge" Menefee; two nephews, Freddie Miles, and Sam Menefee; a great-nephew, Wesley Thompson; and a great-niece, Jocelyn Calvetti.
It was Joan's wishes to be cremated. A funeral service will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Coulterville City Cemetery, Coulterville, IL.
Visitation will be at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m.
