James E. Dunn's Obituary
James E. "Jim" Dunn, age 84, of Pinckneyville, passed away on Thursday, May 04, 2006 at 6:45 a.m. in Friendship Manor, Nashville, IL. Jim was born on June 28, 1921 in West Frankfort, IL a son to Arthur and Florence (Wilks) Dunn. He was a 1st Lieutenant with the United States Army during World War II seeing action in the landing at Normandy and during the Battle of the Bulge and retiring from the Army Reserves as a Major. He was married to Betty Smith on October 19, 1945 in the Sesser Baptist Church by Betty's father, Rev. D.H. Smith. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville where he served as the Sunday school superintendent and as a deacon for numerous years. Jim was the secretary/treasurer for the Pinckneyville Library Board, a member of the Pinckneyville Lions Club and the Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce. He was also involved in the formation of the original Pinckneyville Airport. Jim enjoyed bowling, was an avid golfer, and was a member of the country club. During his lifetime, he and his brothers, Marion and Ralph, had been co-owners of Dunn Brothers in Pinckneyville and he later retired as a clerk from the Secretary of State Drivers License Facility. Survivors include his wife: Betty of Pinckneyville, one son: Steve and Fran Dunn of Bellflower, MO, one daughter: Nancy and Fred Starkweather of Herrin, IL, two sisters-in-law: Norma Dunn of Pinckneyville, and Sherry Dunn of DuQuoin, 5 grandchildren: Jeff and Laura Starkweather and their children: Megan, Melissa, Madison, and Max, James and Kandi Starkweather and their children: Austin, Alyx, Blake, Maci, and Bayli, Jeremy and Amy Starkweather and their son: Gavin, Kevin and Martie Dunn and their children: Stephanie and Erica, and Keith and Milissa Dunn and their children: Joseph and Katherine, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Marion Dunn and Ralph Dunn, three sisters: Mildren Rowland, Margaret Schimpf, and Olive Talbert. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 105 South Mill, Pinckneyville on Monday, May 8, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Rick Hatley officiating. Interment will be in the Pinckneyville I.O.O.F. Cemetery (a.k.a. Pinckneyville City Cemetery), on County Road, with military graveside rites provided by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504. Friends may call at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m., and on Monday at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. till 9:30 a.m. and then at the church from 10:00 a.m. until services. Memorial donations may be made to Pinckneyville Public Library or the First Baptist Church.
