James Michael Cavanaugh's Obituary
James Michael "Jim" Cavanaugh, age 87, of Pinckneyville, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2006 at 9:43 a.m. in the Illinois Veterans Home, Anna. Jim was born on September 17, 1919 in Charleston, MA, a son to Michael and Bridget (McGaffigan) Cavanaugh. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard serving during World War II as a Quartermaster 3rd Class where he earned several medals including an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with two stars (Initial landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa), Philippine Liberation, Authorized Occupation of Japan 8/28/45 to 9/10/45, Good Conduct Ribbon PB 86-44, WWII Victory Medal (ALNAV), and American Campaign Medal (ALNAV 351-450). He married Dorothy Rennison on January 13, 1944 in Rockland, ME and she preceded him in death on August 6, 1986. Together they owned and operated Dot's Café in Pinckneyville for over 30 years. In his lifetime, he served as director of the ESDA for many years, was a member of the Pinckneyville Fire Department, and volunteered for the Perry County Sheriff's Office. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother: John Cavanaugh, one infant sister, and a special niece: Phyllis Hepp. Funeral services will be held in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with Brother Rob Mathis officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504. Friends may call at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial donations may be made to Mueller Hill Cemetery Association or Illinois Veterans Home, Anna, IL.
