Hugh D. Malan, age 100, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 6:08 p.m. Hugh was born on May 16, 1914 in Pinckneyville, IL, a son of Wilfred C. and Cora B. (DeVinny) Malan. On November 24, 1939, he married R Read Obituary
My thoughts are with the family. I owe (Mr. Malan) a great deal. He is responsible for hiring me as a teacher in Dist. 50 and trusting in a kid just out of college. I will always remember him as a very caring and giving individual. He gave me a chance to prove myself as a teacher. I only hope that I lived up to his expectations. Thanks again Hugh for all your years of service to the children of Pinckneyville You will be missed.
Mr. Malan was the principal when I was in grade school. He always had a smile and a kind word for me whenever I would see him in the halls. He and his wife were wonderful people and I am glad to say that I knew them. My condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed.
What a precious Saint, friend and neighbor. We will miss his sweet spirit but will see him and Ruth again. What a happy reunion that will be!
In 1977, Hugh and Ruth took his parents to the 1st Illinois Malan Family Reunion in Greenville. Wilfred died 15 months later, the last of (62) grandchildren of Etienne & Suzanne Malan who emigrated from Angrogna, Italy; landed in New Orleans on 2-25-1859; and came up the Mississippi to the French-speaking town of Sebastopol, 40 miles east of St. Louis.
Around 1995, Hugh and Ruth invited me to dine with them and other relatives in Pinckneyville after a weekend tromping through the Shawnee National Forest.
In 2011 -- 12 days before her 100th Birthday -- my mother Helen Malan died. Now Hugh, the grandson of Helena Malan, has passed away 2 days after his 100th Birthday. Congratulations on a life "well-lived ! "...Well done... Good and Faithful servant"

So many fond memories of Mr. Malan. He always had a smile for everyone as he walked down the hallways at school.
