Frank Hoxie Smith Frank Hoxie Smith, age 90, of Midland, TX, formerly of Du Quoin, IL, passed away on February 10, 2012 at 1:06 a.m. at his home in Midland. "Hoxie", as he was known, was born on December 2, 1921 in North Platte, Nebraska a son to Lucius S, and Georgie (Hoxie) Smith, Jr. Hoxie was a veteran of the First Infantry Division and participated in actions in the Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge. His unit participated in early actions which resulted in taking the Bridge at Ramagen, which was the last bridge crossing the Rhine River into Germany. He is survived by two wives, Irene Zeigler Smith of Rhode Island and Virginia Witt Smith of Du Quoin, IL; three sons, George David Smith of New York, Daniel Witt Smith of Du Quoin, IL, and Walter Hoxie Smith of Midland, TX; a daughter, Suzanne Elizabeth Smith Rawlings of Mesa, AZ; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Military services conducted by Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the family plot in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Du Quoin, IL. Pyatt Funeral Home in Du Quoin, IL is in charge of local arrangements.
