Francis Lyle Auld's Obituary
Francis Lyle Auld, 83 years old, Native Man of Oakdale, IL and last 3 years lived in Poplar Bluff, Mo entered his heavenly rest on February 21, 2013, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center. Son and fourth child of Ollie Hood and Fanny Watson (McConnell), Lyle was born on October 25, 1929 at the family home in Oakdale, Illinois. At the young age of 12, Lyle joined the United Presbyterian Church of Oakdale and he remains a member. While living in Poplar Bluff the past 3 years, he faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church, his Sunday school and the Men's Study Group. Lyle graduated from the Oakdale Elementary and the Nashville Community High School in Illinois. After graduation, he worked on the pipeline from Missouri to Indiana, and then farmed with his father until he was called to duty. Lyle served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He received the Korean Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Medals for 2 combat actions, United Nation's Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Lyle lived his life as a patriotic American man and is very proud of his Children and Grandchildren that have chosen to serve their country. He married Mary Alice Auld (Frieman) on June 30, 1956 at the Reform Presbyterian Church of Oakdale. In 1960, he left farming to work for Square Deal, (which later became Mid-America Dairyman) for 18 years. He then worked as a guard at the Menard/Chester prison for 20 years until retiring at age 67. Lyle still farmed helping his long-life friend; Glenn Thompson until 2009. While the children were growing up, Lyle was very active in the community; Monday night softball games at the Oakdale Ball diamond, attending his children's academics and sporting events, 4-H leader, took the children's friends camping with them. Lyle also loved gardening and finding new recipes for his crops. When finally retired, Lyle and Alice moved to Poplar Bluff, MO to live with their oldest daughter Jayne and her husband Mark Bader. He moved his VFW Lifetime membership to Wappapello POST #3416, He volunteered his time at the VA hospital, went fishing with Mark and Jayne, still gardening and having coffee in the mornings at his favorite little coffee shop, always with a story to tell. Lyle had two remarkable Lifetime Experiences he loved to share. He and Alice and daughters; Fern and Rebecca, traveled to Europe, to Belgium, where their daughter Roberta, in the US ARMY was serving as a bodyguard to a Four Star General. He had said his favorite experience while there was visiting a Belgium farm and looking at the animals and machinery. Taking a cruise down the Rhine River looking at Castles was an enjoyable experience too. The second experience occurred when his daughter Jayne, herself a 21 year OIF/OEF Veteran, entered him in the National Golden Age Veteran's Olympics. Returning after a week of competition his daughter and him bonded like battle buddies. He was the Hero bringing home 2 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal and then receiving a Commemorative Coin from the VA Medical Center Director, Margie Hedstom. Lyle is survived by his wife, Mary Alice (Frieman) Auld of Poplar Bluff, MO, 8 children: Ken (Loretta) Auld of St. Peters, MO; Mary Jayne (Mark) Bader of Poplar Bluff, MO; Alice Gail Auld Gant of Marble Hill, MO; Alan (Sharon) Auld of Centralia, IL; Rebecca (Brett) Glodo of Willisville, IL; Roberta (Michael) Nebel of Tacoma, WA; Fern (Kevin) Ellison of Centralia, IL; Faith (Jerry) Ahlers of Oak Grove, MN, Four sister-in-law and 3 brother-in-law: Norman Jean Auld of Marine, IL; Jolene Fahnestock of Decatur, IL; Jacklyn Sue and Dennis Uthe of Washburn, IA; Jerry and Barbara Frieman of Nashville, IL; and Paul Campbell of Cowden, IL; 29 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren and more on the way and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lyle was preceded in death by: his parents, Ollie H. and Fanny; two infant sons, David Lyle and Jon James; one infant grandson, Mark Anthony Berthold; one brother, John Robert Auld, two sisters, Marjorie Hillyard and Janet Bell Zeller; and one son-in-law, Loyd Gant. Throughout his life, Lyle was a very loving and caring man with a vibrant sense of humor. He never met a stranger without befriending him. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held at the United Presbyterian Church, Oakdale, IL on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend John Campbell officiating. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Oakdale, IL. Military honors provided by Sparta V.F.W. Post # 2698. Friends may call at the United Presbyterian Church, Oakdale, IL on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, Oakdale, IL.
