Edwin C. Mayer's Obituary
Edwin Calvin Mayer, age 92, of Springfield, IL, formerly of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 5:45 a.m. in Regency Care, Springfield, IL.
Edwin was born on February 27, 1927 in Pinckneyville, IL, a son to Edward K. and Mathilda (Wildermuth) Mayer. On January 8, 1994, he married Verna Lee (Bigham) Bauersachs in Pinckneyville IL, and she survives. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Pinckneyville Zion Lutheran Church, the Perry County Farm Bureau, and the V.F.W.
Edwin was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean War as a truck driver with the 43rd Trans Truck Company. When the peace was signed, the 43rd Trans Truck Company was chosen to return North Korean and Chinese P.O.W.s back to North Korea through the D.M.Z. He made sixty trips to North Korea. He received the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Verna Lee Mayer of Chatham, IL; a stepson, Jerry (Cheryl) Bauersachs of Grafton, IL; two stepdaughters, Gina Bauersachs-Miller of Auburn, IL and Gail (David) Rudolph of East Palo Alto, CA; eight step-grandchildren; twenty-six step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a stepson, Lynn Dean Bauersachs of Savannah, GA.
Funeral services will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend David Kollmeyer officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL. Military graveside rites will be held by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504 and the U.S. Army.
Visitation will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Mueller Hill Cemetery.
