Dr. Herbert Hugh Chapman D.D.S.'s Obituary
Dr. Herbert Hugh Chapman D.D.S., age 89, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023 at 4:48 a.m., in his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Herb was born on November 25, 1933 in Steeleville, IL, a son to Fred H. and Viola (Crabill) Chapman.
Herb attended Nashville Community High School for two years before graduating from Waltonville High School. He continued his education by obtaining his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University. After graduation, Herb honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1953-1957. He began his basic flight training at NAS Pensacola, FL, and advanced to Lt JG at NAS Beeville, TX. As a Navy aviator, Herb was assigned to jet squadron VF-171 in NAS Jacksonville, FL where he became the squadron commander. While in the Navy, Herb married Tirzah Jean Kane of Pinckneyville on August 13, 1955. Together they celebrated sixty-five (65!) years of marriage.
After leaving the Navy, Herb attended the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Chicago, IL in 1963. Herb began practicing Dentistry in Pinckneyville with his father-in-law, Dr. Ralph Kane.
He then established the Pinckneyville Dental Clinic in 1968. He was joined by Dr. Charles Roe in 1973 and in 1986 proudly by his son, Dr. Ralph K. Chapman, until he retired in December 2006. He served Pinckneyville and the surrounding areas for forty-three (43) years.

Herb's greatest joys came from sharing experiences and time with his wife Tirzah, his family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Aside from his family and friends, Herb enjoyed his farm "Tooth Acres", mowing grass, gardening and golfing. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and Illinois High School Basketball fan, especially the Pinckneyville Panthers!
Survivors include his three sons and one daughter, David (Denise) Chapman of Destin, FL, Dr. Ralph (Cathy) Chapman of Pinckneyville, IL, and Dr. Nathan Chapman of Murphysboro, IL and Tirzah Renée (Mike) Skaggs of Tamaroa, IL; ten grandchildren, Amber (Jesse) Phillips, Dr. Emily (Dr. Franklin Payne) Slechticky, Kristin Slechticky, Darren (Natalie) Chapman, Kaylea Slechticky, Daryl Chapman (fiancé Chris Hoffman), Preston (Dr. Mallory) Chapman, Ryan Chapman (fiancé Tory Looney), Olivia Chapman and Alex Chapman; and six great-grandchildren, Avery Phillips, Easton Phillips, Ellison Chapman, Violet Slechticky, Etta Slechticky and Astro Chapman; two sisters, Diane (Bob) Pieske of St. Louis, MO; and Mary Kay (Gil) Moe of Palm Desert, CA; and special friends, Jennifer (Brian) Kurwicki.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred H. Chapman and Viola Crabill Chapman Ceglenski; his wife of 65 years, Tirzah Jean Kane Chapman; and one sister, Bonnie Dunlop.
Funeral services will be held at First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Sam Foskey officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL. Military honors will be conducted by the Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504, Pinckneyville, IL, and the United States Navy.
Visitation will be at First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.
