Doris Jean Porter's Obituary
Doris Jean Porter, age 92, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away at 3:40 a.m., on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Pinckneyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Doris was born on October 24, 1931 in Rice, IL, a daughter to Otto Henry and Anna Caroline (Jausel) Nehring. On December 3, 1949, she married Lester Ray Porter in DuQuoin, IL and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2014, after 65 years of marriage. She and Lester worked at the gas station in DuBois, IL when they were first married, and later became a waitress at Traveler's Café, and she also was a cook and camp counselor at DuBois Center, as well as a cook at Lake Sallateeska Baptist Camp, Pinckneyville, IL. Doris was a member at St. Mark's United Church of Christ in DuBois, IL where she played the organ for over 50 years. She later attended St. Paul United Church of Christ, Pinckneyville, IL. She was a Sunday school teacher and youth group leader at St. Mark UCC Church in DuBois, IL. Doris volunteered at Pinckneyville Community Hospital Axillary, 4-H leader for the Rice Hustlers, and belonged to the Pinckneyville Home Extension. Doris loved sewing, scrapbooking, cooking, baking and making apple butter. She enjoyed playing the organ, violin, and accordion. Doris earned a food service certificate from the University of Florida. Her greatest passion in life was taking care of her family and spending time with her loved ones.
Survivors include her four sons, David L. (Linda) Porter of Oakdale, IL, Gary A. Porter of Rice, IL, Marshall R. (Carla) Porter of Oakdale, and Marty L. (Beth) Porter of Pinckneyville, IL; four grandchildren, Kara Jo (Jeff) Carson, Greg Porter, Michael (Kimberly) Porter, Hannah (Daeshawn Duffie) Porter; five step-grandchildren, Justin Kellerman, Jared (Whitney) Kellerman, Jeni (Eric) Gunn, Alex Miller, and Kaleb (Brittany) Miller; three great-grandchildren, Logan Porter, Lucas Porter, and Scotty Porter; several step-great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Arthur Nehring; and two grandchildren, David Porter Jr., and James David Porter.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's United Church of Christ, DuBois, IL on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Jason Eisele and Pastor Dave Trover officiating. Interment will be at Concord Baptist Cemetery, Rice, IL.
Visitation will be at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and again on Wednesday morning at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Church of Christ or Concord Baptist Cemetery.
