Clyde W. Dempsay's Obituary
Clyde Wayne Dempsay, age 85, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019 at 3:03 p.m. in his home.
Clyde was born on February 27, 1934 in Washington County, IL, a son of Elmer and Alpha (Reidelberger) Dempsay. He married Gladys Hubler on August 6, 1955 in Concord Baptist Church, Rice, IL and she survives. Clyde retired as a Chief E-8 from the U.S. Navy with a career of 22 years. He was a third crewman in the A3D Aircraft and spent many missions aboard various aircraft carriers. After retiring from the Navy, Clyde worked in real estate and later owned his own business, Dempsay Heating and Air. His volunteer service included the Gideons International, Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504, he was a veteran's benefit advocate and involved in prison ministries. Clyde was a follower of Christ and was passionate about sharing his faith with others. He was the "life of the party" and was a "people person." He loved an adventure and living life to the fullest.
He was a great family man and husband to Gladys, with whom he celebrated sixty-four years of marriage. He was a loving father to four children, Joni (Skip) Leininger of O'Fallon, IL, Clyde Jeffrey (Jeri) Dempsay of Anahuac, TX, Sherri (Randal) Clark of Pinckneyville, IL, and Terri (Steve) Kuhnert of Pinckneyville, IL. Greg (Teresa) Dempsey of Las Vegas, NV is loved as a son and embraced as a family member. Other survivors include his sister, Viva McLean of Centralia, IL; four brothers, Asa D. (Marcia) Dempsay of Baxter, TN, Paul O. (Pat) Dempsay of Wilmington, IL, Ralph C. (Diane) Dempsay of Plano, IL and Doug R. (Judy) Dempsay of Sun City, AZ; thirteen grandchildren, Jana Kuhnert, Tara (Mark) Carter, Jennifer Brady, Abigail (Nathaniel) Rose, Chad (Rima) Dempsay, Breana (Simon) Acevedo, Dustin (Chelsea) Kuhnert, Joshua (Melissa) Leininger, Alissa (James) Crews, Sarah Beth (Alex) Smith, Chase (Ashley) Dempsay, Allie Kuhnert and Taylor Kuhnert; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Alpha Dempsay; one brother, Elmer D. Dempsay; three sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Dempsay, Mary Dempsay, and Virginia Dempsay; one brother-in-law, Bruce McLean; two nieces, Maria Dempsay and Jeannie Byrd; and two nephews, Randy Dempsay and Alan Dempsay.
Funeral services will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Rob Mathis and Brother Skip Leininger officiating. Interment will be in Concord Baptist Cemetery, Rice, IL. Military graveside rites will be held by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504 and the U.S. Navy.
Visitation will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church Youth, The Gideons International or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
