Bernice Smith's Obituary
Bernice Smith, age 100, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Fairview Rehabilitation and Health Center, DuQuoin, IL.
Bernice was born on August 3, 1922, in Pinckneyville, IL, a daughter to Fred and Lillian (Feltmeyer) Hoffman. On March 15, 1938, she married Billy D. Smith, in Perryville, MO and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1986. She worked 40 years as an x-ray technician for Pinckneyville Clinic, Pinckneyville, IL. Bernice was a member of New Hope Community Church, Pinckneyville, IL. She volunteered her time for Meals on Wheels and church activities. She was a member of the benevolence committee at New Hope Community Church and the L.P.N. association. Bernice loved to quilt and watch the St. Louis Cardinals play. Her passion was her family and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her three children, Roger Smith of Pinckneyville, IL; Linda (Johnny) Ruffino of Glen Carbon, IL; and Janet Toler of Mt. Vernon, IN; ten grandchildren, Dana (Gary) Shorfheide, Doug (Laura) Hutchings, June (Dan) Rinehart, Lisa (Jerry) Nelson, Mark (Nancy) Smith, Steve (Dawn) Smith, Erin (Toby) Queen, and Darin Toler; a host of great and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years; parents; two grandchildren, D.J. Toler and Debbie Mohr; one brother, William Hoffman, and one sister, Lois Fisher.
Funeral services will be held at New Hope Community Church, Pinckneyville, IL, on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor James Clardy officiating. Interment will in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.
Visitation will be at held at New Hope Community Church, Pinckneyville, IL, on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Julius Morar Missionary (checks can be made out to New Hope Community Church).
