Bernice Ann Mathis' Obituary
Bernice Ann Mathis, age 80, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in Herrin Hospital, Herrin, IL. Bernice was born on August 5, 1944, in Denmark, IL, a daughter to Arnold William and Minnie Francis (Williams) Moore. On May 11, 1963, she married Max "Mick" Mathis and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage. Bernice was an active member of Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL. She founded the Perry County Handicap program and devoted 14 years to this program benefiting handicapped individuals from throughout Perry County. Bernice worked for Decca Records in her early years and then lovingly cared for her son Steve, to whom she was a totally devoted and loving mother. She was a kind, generous person who quietly helped many people and worthy organizations, often anonymously. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her loving husband of 61 years, Mick Mathis, of Pinckneyville, IL, special friend Kim Hicks, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Steven Max Mathis; three brothers, Homer Lee Moore, Leon William Moore, and Ronald Moore (in infancy); three sisters, Lavon Mae Owen, Nancy LeeAnn Fortenberry, and Brenda Sue Cox. Funeral services will be held at Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Mark Lee officiating. Interment will be in Galum Presbyterian Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL. Visitation will be held at Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL, on Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL. Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL, has been entrusted with arrangements.
