Alex Singer's Obituary
Alex Singer, age 86, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 10:55 a.m. in Cedarhurst Senior Living, Highland, IL.
Alex was born on February 7, 1939, in Pinckneyville, IL, a son to Harry L. and Agnes (Welman) Singer. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. On December 31, 1965 he married Mary Ann Easdale in Tilden, IL and she preceded him in death on April 29, 1970.
Alex graduated from PCHS in 1957 with honors and as a top athlete.? With the careful eye of Coach Merril "Duster" Thomas, he had transformed into one of Pinckneyville's top basketball players, catching the eye of Mississippi State University recruiters and receiving a basketball scholarship.? Alex played for the Bulldogs all 4 years as a starting Center during which they were SEC Champions in 1959 & 1961.
Graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor's in Industrial Technology he then enlisted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served 2 years as a Personnel Specialist.? Honorably discharged in 1963, he went to work in the Ohio Coal Mines but quickly decided that life wasn't for him and enrolled at SIU Carbondale to get his Masters of Industrial Education.? Employed in 1964 at Sparta High School as a teacher he also coached basketball, football, and track.? It was here that he met and married Mary Ann.? In 1966 he landed the Industrial Arts teaching position at PCHS and came back home where he remained employed for 27 years before taking early retirement.
Alex was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL. He utilized his love of working with his hands, welding and woodworking both in his career and retirement. He enjoyed camping in his Airstream trailer, boating, water skiing, trail riding horses, deer hunting, and fishing, especially for northern pike in Canada and sharks in Florida, where he loved spending his winters.
Survivors include his two daughters, Tracie (Gary) Dunn of Paris, KY and Melody (Patrick) Clements of Highland, IL; four grandchildren, Gary Dunn II, Clay Dunn, Ethan (Emily) Clements, and Gabriel Clements; two great-grandchildren, Theodore Dunn and Joseph Dunn; and a niece and nephew, David (Bobbye) Wieman and Janet Rozum.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Nancy Wieman; and two stepsisters.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Leanne Noland officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.
Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Pinckneyville Community High School Education Foundation or the First United Methodist Church, Pinckneyville, IL.
