Loyd E. “Gene” Nehrkorn, age 80, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 11:20 a.m. in the Washington County Hospital in Nashville, IL.
Gene was born on July 8, 1932, in rural Pinckneyville, IL, a son of Chris J. and Clara (Gass) Nehrkorn. He was united in marriage to Glenna Hammack on September 9, 1953 at the Presbyterian Manse, Pinckneyville, IL and she preceded him in death on February 22, 2009 after 55 years of marriage. Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and worked as a coal miner for Consolidation Coal Company’s Burning Star #2 mine for over 25 years.
Gene served as an elder for over thirty years in the First Christian Church, Pinckneyville, IL. He enjoyed listening to country and gospel music, camping, hunting and fishing (especially trout fishing), playing cards, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Friendship Church of Christ, Tamaroa, IL.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeanie Jenkel and husband Alan, of Pinckneyville, IL; two sons, Jeff Nehrkorn and wife Michelle, of Tazewell, VA, and John Nehrkorn and wife Donita of Pinckneyville, IL; one brother, Bill Nehrkorn and wife JoAnn, of Tamaroa, IL; one sister, Wanda Miller of Pinckneyville, IL; one sister-in-law, Mildred Nehrkorn of Pinckneyville, IL; five grandchildren, Justin Nehrkorn and wife Rindy, Jeremy Nehrkorn and wife Brittny, Jordan, Casey and Caleb Nehrkorn; three step-grandchildren, Stefanie, Andrew and Zachary; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was anticipating the arrival of his first great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Glenna; three brothers, Paul Nehrkorn, Bob Nehrkorn and George Nehrkorn; and two sisters, Myrtle McElroy and Clara Goldman.
Funeral Services will be held in the Friendship Church of Christ, Tamaroa, IL on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Sam Eddy and Brother Randy Allison officiating. Interment will be in the Galum Presbyterian Cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.
Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, IL on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday at Friendship Church of Christ, Tamaroa, IL from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Pinckneyville Ambulance Service or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
